My first solo costume design project, this production of Our Town was staged with the concept of a traveling troupe performing against bare brick walls and minimal furniture. Costumes reflected that simplicity, as though pulled from a few trunks carried on the road, underscoring the play’s themes of small-town life and universal humanity.

The production embraced simplicity, aligning with the director’s concept of a traveling troupe telling the story with only a few trunks of costumes. Everyday garments were modest and practical, designed to evoke the rhythms of small-town life. Color was used thematically: townspeople appeared in subtle, lived-in hues during Act I, while Act II shifted to monochrome versions of those same costumes, marking the passage from life to death.

Traveling Troupe Concept: Costumes constructed to feel portable and adaptable, as though repurposed from a troupe’s trunk.
Death Palette: Each deceased character wore a faded version of their Act I costume; the lighter the shade, the more recent the death.
Emily’s Wedding Dress: Reappeared in Act II as a pure white version, symbolizing both her recent passing and the poignancy of her story.
